Interview: Laura Whitmore on itv2's Survival of the Fittest

The South African savannah will be the backdrop to a new ITV2 entertainment show launching this year. Co-produced by ITV Studios and Motion Content Group, Survival of the Fittest will see a group of young, hot singles living together under the searing sun as they take part in the ultimate battle of the sexes, in order to win a big cash prize.

A team of Girls and a team of Boys will battle it out in a series of stunning physical and mental
challenges to determine which sex has the upper hand, while romantic dates will test their
loyalties to the limit. Will the girls put sisters before misters and will the boys choose mates
over dates? Or will the temptation be too much and they end up in bed with the enemy?

Hosted by Laura Whitmore and from the makers of Love Island, this brand new stripped entertainment series will give viewers the power to decide who stays in the competition, who goes home, and which sex ultimately comes out on top.

Head of Digital Channels and Acquisitions, Paul Mortimer said: “ITV2’s younger audience will no
doubt relish the escapism this immersive physical game show from Head of Digital Channels and Acquisitions, Paul Mortimer said: “ITV2’s younger audience will no doubt relish the escapism this immersive physical game show sunny South Africa will provide. Host Laura Whitmore tells us more...

What is the appeal of Survival of the Fittest?

Survival of the Fittest is the ultimate battle of the sexes. From the makers of Love Island and I’m
A Celeb, it’s a brand new format and there hasn’t been a show quite like this on TV. It is the
perfect time of year for the show to be on because we are set under the South African sun in the
savannah, so while it’s miserable weather in the UK, you can watch some lovely people in some
glorious surroundings. The really interesting thing is the battle of the sexes element – we are
going to challenge and pit our contestants against each other in two teams, Boys and Girls. The
contestants are all single so could they be distracted along the way?

What makes Survival of the Fittest different to anything else?

The show pitches Boys against Girls. The challenges are massive, they are huge in scale, there are
huge production values to this as well and I’m really interested to see how the guys and girls will
react to these. Will the Boys do as well in the challenges as you think they will? Or will the
Girls beat them? I think we’re going to put a few myths to bed.

What can we expect from this ultimate battle of the sexes?

You can expect drama, excitement, rivalry and humour… and hopefully a bit of romance as they are all single!

What are you excited to see happen this series?

I’m excited to see the relationships between people – not just Boys and Girls romantically but
within the sisterhood… and will we see bromances? I’m really looking forward to seeing these
relationships develop and in turn, see how that relationships develop an affects the competition.

If you were living in The Lodge, what would be your secret strength that would stand you in good stead for the challenges?

I am a really good talker and listener. I love a girly chat, I could be on the phone to my mates at
3am having a chat, that’s just the type of person I am. That has always served me well,
particularly when working away or being away from home. I’m a girl’s girl and I always think that’s a good quality to have. I’ve got a good group of girlfriends which I think would stand me well in a situation like this.

And any weaknesses you’d be concealing?

I’m not a very sporty person at all. I once won ‘Most Improved Badminton Player’ and that was the height of my sporting victories.

Will you be rooting for the girls?

Obviously I’ll be rooting for the Girls! And we have Brennan Reece voicing the show to represent
for the Boys. But I’m really intrigued to see what happens.

What are you most looking forward to about filming in South Africa?

I’ve never been before! I’m excited about the fact that it’s authentic, real, we will be on site
and a zebra could walk by. I’m excited about the landscape. And the weather isn’t bad!

What kind of contestant do you think would make the ultimate team member?

I think you need an all-rounder for a show like this. There is no good in just having physical
strength because the challenges are quite varied so it’s important to be fit but also have other
skills as well. Be a good team player – that’s the most important thing!

Survival of the Fittest starts Sunday 11 February, 9pm on itv2.
