Interview: Paddy McGuinness on the return of itv's Take Me Out
Dating returns to Saturday night as Take Me Out celebrates its 10th series
With seven weddings, three babies (and two on the way!) the bar has been set high, as a new line up of Flirty Thirty ladies get ready to meet the single boys braving the Love Lift, all hoping to be whisked away to the sunny isle of Fernando’s.
King of Dating, Paddy McGuinness, works his matchmaking magic over seven brand new episodes, and two specials. One features a line-up of thirty fabulous single older ladies looking for love. The second special episode - starring Chloe Sims (The Only Way is Essex) and Claudia Fragapane (Gold Medal Winning gymnast and Strictly Come Dancing semi-finalist) - sees Paddy flip the format for the very first time and ‘bring on the boys’, when thirty of Paddy’s favourite male contestants from previous series return for another chance at finding ‘The One’.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK FOR YOUR TENTH SERIES?
It’s mad because it’s the same crew so you look forward to seeing everyone.I just genuinely don’t know where the time has gone! It’s crazy considering the amount of weddings we’ve had and kids being born from people meeting on the show. When I think about it, I feel very proud. It’s lovely.
WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S STILL SO LOVED?
We don’t try and be too ‘cool for school’. It’s a dating show, but it’s a Saturday night entertainment show as well, so you can sit there and watch it with your friends, family, the kids, everyone. Everyone gets involved, we’re all shouting at the telly telling her to pick him! It’s just a nice easy watch.
ARE YOU PROUD OF YOUR SUCCESS - SEVEN WEDDINGS AND THREE BABIES SO FAR IS PRETTY GOOD GOING!
I am really proud, it’s the world’s most successful dating show, which is amazing. I met a little girl the other day whose parents were contestants and I sat there thinkin, ‘this little person would not be here if mum and dad hadn’t met on TAKE ME OUT’. It’s mad when you think about it. I don’t get emotional, I’m just proud to be a part of something like that. It’s great and just a nice, ‘boy meets girl/ they go off to Fernando’s’ thing and hopefully something comes of it. The fact we’ve had seven weddings and three children is amazing. There are another two children on the way. Even two people from our crew, who had met behind the scenes, recently got married. So I’m spreading the love, even when I’m off duty!
HOW’S IT GONE THIS SERIES?
It’s gone really well. When I first meet the girls I never know which way it’s going to go. I always say it will take a few shows for me to get to know them all, their personalities. The girls this series hit the ground running and have been a pleasure to work with. There have been a lot of dates so we’re looking good this series!
WHAT’S THE NAUGHTIEST BIT OF GOSSIP YOU’VE HEARD COMING OUT OF FERNANDO’S?
Well, they keep me in the dark with stuff like that, honestly, they do! I don’t get to hear any gossip about the dates, but I’m not too fussed about that. What I hear is what viewers see happen on the telly, that’s it.
CAN TAKE ME OUT LAST ANOTHER TEN YEARS AND WOULD YOU STILL WANT TO BE DOING IT?
We’ll have to wait and see but I don’t immerse myself in showbiz life. I’m not at every red carpet event or going to the opening of an envelope. I still enjoy the job. I enjoy going to the studio and seeig everyone. It still excites me. So as long as that still happens then I’ll keep going!
Tune in to find out which of the Flirty Thirty will be lucky enough to win themselves a date and be successful in their quest to find love. Take Me Out, Saturdays, on itv.
